A ll about the hotel room incident. This is another situation where some have claimed the coach is promoting a lesbian lifestyle and where information isn’t directly available from EVERYONE involved. I do have a note from a player who was present in the room.

Initially this sounded really bad- a lesbian coach assigning two lesbian team members to the same hotel room. Both had been open about their choice- one more proactive on her social media pages than the other. But both were honest and open to the school community. Teachers and students and the team members knew. However when first asked the coach denied knowing her players were lesbians. Most found that answer to unbelievable because that would have meant the coach didn’t pay attention at

practice or to her players and she was totally unaware when the most knew otherwise. When this point was discussed the coach provided additional information- she supposedly assigned seniors with freshmen to hotel rooms and that made sense because the coach had assigned upperclassmen to support underclassmen early in the season. But….

I received a note from a player who was very angry with me. In the process of venting her concerns she informed me that yes the lesbians were assigned to the same room and she knows because she and another girl were assigned to the same room as well. I didn’t bother to ask who slept in what bed. Nor did I explain that her coaches “story” was very different from hers. So either she or the coach was not telling the truth. I didn’t ask if the couple was left alone- I didn’t even ask when the couple started dating. In addition I refused to share the information until now, mostly because this is a tough issue and not a single player seemed to know all the details involved in all the situations that have come to the schools, parents and now community’s attention

None of that matters. What matters is the coach’s comments do not match the players written statement and who was there in the room . Some have said this is an example of a lesbian coach encouraging lesbian behavior in teenagers. Again, I will say everyone knows basing decisions to place teen couples in a room be they be “hetero” or “homo” sexual partners is inappropriate. Even if the coach didn’t intend that to be the case- there is still a sense of poor oversight and bad decision making. FYI- parents weren’t aware until team members were overheard or discussed the decision with their parents.
